How to Make 100k A Year With Minimal Money and Experience: Option 1- Roof Estimator

Making money is the easiest thing to do once you take your mind off the parameters of what is possible. Since Kindergarten, we have been told that getting good grades, listening to the teachers, and prepping for the SAT/ACT is the fast track to a successful life. At the Dapper Syndicate, we believe that there are multiple avenues to being successful and not everyone is meant to have a cookie cutter approach to making their life successful. Let’s talk about one possible road you can take to success if you have limited funds and a hunger for elevating your experience.

Understanding the Difference Between Pay for Time VS. Pay for Performance

Most people want to know they have a for sure thing. Living at home is not easy when you are adult and want to spread your wings. To combat this, most people take the first job they can get that will be enough to pay rent on a dismal apartment to feel as if ” they made it”. While this is a path, we believe that there could be another that will help you move leaps and bounds above the rest of your peer group. Instead of getting a straight hourly position, consider a role that has some sort of commission base attached to it or even a strictly commission based position. If you are ever willing to risk it all, this would be a great time to do so. Consider the fact that not only do you have no rent due (or a small number at that), and your utilities are paid for, living at home is the perfect time to go big and learn a commission based position.

If you decide to swing for the fences and pursue a commission based position, you are among the select few that have complete control over how much money you can make. While these positions are not for the weak of heart, they can be very rewarding. Normally, these positions are sales based. Do not let this deter you from considering this type of opportunity. If you can hold a normal conversation, you can do a sales based commission role. Most people overthink what it takes to close deals and build a sales funnel. As long as you are willing to take the time and put yourself out there, you can make this work.

Example Career Path for Six Figure Earnings: Roof Estimation

When you lack certifications and experience, tenacity and a positive attitude will make you the most money. As someone who is new to the workforce, these two character traits can be the key to making a fortune or going home day after day empty handed. Finding your personal path to success starts with a foundation. If you build upon these two traits, you give yourself the opportunity to rewrite the future of your family.

To start off our six figure career series, let’s start with one that has a very low barrier to entry and can provide enormous outcomes in the right market. As a roof estimator, the sky is the limit. The more you are willing to work, the better your opportunity is to make a six figure career!

What it Takes to Get Started

As a roof estimator, your main objective is to find external parts of the house that are in need of repair. From the roof itself to siding, fencing, gutters, roof fixtures, chimneys, and interior ceilings, all of these are options that could lead to a payday for you. Once you have found the right amount of issues for your client, you take your findings and help them initiate a claim for the insurance company. Once approved, the roof goes on and you get paid!

While it is not too hard to understand the concept, the results from your endeavor are based on a few different factors. If you decide to go down this path, make sure the companies you are applying for are known for providing excellent work and have a track record for great internal culture. As Warren Buffet once said, “It does not matter how hard you row. It matters which boat you get in.” If you are not with a company that is willing to nurture you as an individual and help you achieve your goals of better sales person, you are in the wrong boat.

Outside of getting in the right boat, you need to be willing to invest in yourself. One of the best ways to do this is through courses. Our personal favorite way to give back to ourselves is through reading and listening to books. This method forces you to tune out distractions and focus on the material at hand. When we watch videos on YouTube or consume seemingly educational material on our phones or laptops, we are prone to being distracted and not being able to comprehend or retain all the information required to implement the knowledge given. If you are willing to give this a shot, here are a few books we recommend picking up.

Regardless of your chosen method of self improvement, just get started. If you don’t have a lot of spare cash to invest in books or courses, start with an Audible Membership. It is an easy way to get A LOT of information. In fact, if you time it right, there have been previous promotions where you only have to pay 99 cents for three months of access.

Now that we know we need the right boat and have some knowledge of the building blocks for success, let’s look at the few basic items you should get to make your life easier on the job.

Clipboard with storage– Having a clipboard with storage is a game changer when you are going door to door and climbing on roofs. From holstering all of the marketing material you may have from your company to having some graph paper on hand to chart your hail hits, a clipboard with storage not only provides practical use but also gives consumers a psychological understanding that you are not some guy off the street but someone with a job to do and that you take yourself seriously. While it can feel awkward at the start, having an efficient storage method for multiple documents show that you are organized and ready to tackle a headache for homeowners.

Sidewalk Chalk– When you are on a roof, it is helpful to mark your hail hits for your records. Insurance agencies have minimum standards for a number of hail hits per square to deem a roof in need of replacement. Circling them as you go allows you to refer back to them when the adjuster meets you at the site.

Gloves

Collapsible Ladder– This is by far the most expensive item you will purchase out the gate. Whether you drive a car or a large truck, this ladder is an easy stow and go option to take to a job site. Unless you are starting off on massive homes, you will not need an enormous ladder. This is a fantastic option if you need something for inspections on single story homes.

Roofing Shoes – Before you purchase these, talk to the seasoned vets at your company. They will point you in the right direction on which footwear to purchase. Depending on your market, roofs can be extremely steep and treacherous to climb without the proper footwear. At best, a slip may mess up your hands or puts a hole in your apparel. At worst, sliding off a roof can mean serious injury or worse. Make sure you are wearing the proper shoes for the job.

Making serious money does not require you to have an overpriced education or elite connections. If you are willing to grind and put in the leg work, a six figure career can be achieved right out of high school. Throughout this article we have discussed many factors to success. Out of all of these, the most important are ensuring you are in the right boat and build up your personal development. Small moves daily lead to large gains over time.
